passive smoking

Passive smoking, also known as secondhand smoke, occurs when nonsmokers inhale smoke from someone else's tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. It contains harmful chemicals that can affect the respiratory system and overall health. People exposed to passive smoke, including children and adults, are at increased risk for respiratory diseases, heart problems, and even certain cancers. Because it’s involuntary, passive smoking can occur in enclosed spaces like homes, vehicles, or public places where smoking is permitted. Reducing exposure involves creating smoke-free environments and avoiding areas where others are smoking.
