Pashas of Algeria

The Pashas of Algeria were high-ranking Ottoman officials and administrators during the period when Algeria was part of the Ottoman Empire (16th–19th centuries). The Pasha was responsible for enforcing Ottoman laws, maintaining order, collecting taxes, and managing military affairs in the region. They acted as the empire’s representatives and held significant political power locally. Over time, the role evolved as European influence grew, and eventually, Algeria transitioned from Ottoman control to French colonization in 1830. The Pashas played a key role in maintaining Ottoman authority in North Africa during their rule.
