particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10)
Particulate matter (PM) refers to tiny particles suspended in the air, which can be inhaled into the lungs. PM2.5 consists of particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers, about 30 times smaller than the width of a human hair, allowing them to penetrate deep into the respiratory system. PM10 includes particles up to 10 micrometers in diameter, which can also reach the lungs but are generally larger. These particles originate from sources like vehicle emissions, industrial processes, construction, and natural events like wildfires. High levels of PM can affect health, especially for vulnerable groups, by causing respiratory and cardiovascular problems.
