Parthian cataphracts
Parthian cataphracts were elite cavalry units in ancient Persia, known for their heavily armored horses and soldiers. Operating from around the 3rd century BCE to the 3rd century CE, these forces played a crucial role in the Parthian Empire's military strategy. The cataphracts were equipped with protective gear, including chainmail and shields, allowing them to charge at enemies effectively. Their tactics often involved swift maneuvers and the famous “Parthian shot,” where they would shoot arrows while retreating. This combination of mobility and firepower made them formidable opponents against infantry and rival cavalry forces.
