Parafollicular cells

Parafollicular cells, also known as C cells, are specialized cells located in the thyroid gland, which is situated in your neck. Their main role is to produce a hormone called calcitonin. Calcitonin helps regulate your blood calcium levels by lowering them when they become too high, working alongside other hormones. These cells are positioned around the thyroid follicles but are distinct from the main hormone-producing cells. They are important for maintaining calcium balance in the body, which is essential for healthy bones, muscle function, and nerve activity.
