Papanicolaou Test (Pap Test)
A Papanicolaou test, commonly called a Pap test or Pap smear, is a screening procedure used to detect abnormal cells in a woman's cervix, which can indicate cervical cancer or pre-cancerous changes. During the procedure, a healthcare provider gently collects cells from the cervix using a small brush or spatula. These cells are examined under a microscope to identify any abnormalities early, allowing for timely treatment. Regular Pap tests are an important part of women’s health care, helping to prevent cervical cancer by catching changes before they become serious.
