Papal Bull Inter Caetera
The Papal Bull *Inter Caetera*, issued by Pope Alexander VI in 1493, was a declaration that granted Spain rights to explore and colonize territories in the Americas. It aimed to resolve conflicts between Spain and Portugal over new lands discovered during their voyages. The document drew an imaginary line west of the African coast, giving Spain rights to territories west of the line and Portugal rights to those east. While intended to promote exploration, it significantly impacted indigenous populations and laid the foundation for European colonization, often ignoring the sovereignty and rights of native peoples.
