Pain Gate Theory

The Gate Control Theory of pain suggests that our nervous system has a "gate" mechanism in the spinal cord that regulates pain signals before they reach the brain. When this gate is open, pain signals pass through, causing the sensation of pain. When the gate is closed, fewer signals get through, reducing pain perception. Factors like rubbing the skin or psychological states such as distraction or relaxation can influence this gate, either closing it to lessen pain or opening it to make pain feel more intense. This helps explain why some sensations or emotions can alter our pain experience.
