P2Y12 receptor

The P2Y12 receptor is a protein found on the surface of platelets, which are blood cells involved in clotting. When activated by a molecule called ADP, the P2Y12 receptor triggers platelets to stick together, forming blood clots that help stop bleeding. However, in some cases, such as heart attacks or strokes, these clots can block blood flow. Medications like clopidogrel target the P2Y12 receptor to prevent excessive clot formation, reducing the risk of dangerous blood clots while maintaining normal healing processes.
