Ozone layer depletion occurs when certain man-made chemicals, called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and similar substances, break down ozone molecules in the Earth's stratosphere. The ozone layer acts as a shield, absorbing most of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. When depleted, more UV rays reach the Earth's surface, increasing risks of skin cancer, cataracts, and harming ecosystems. These chemicals released into the atmosphere eventually reach the ozone layer, where they cause ozone molecules to split apart, thinning this vital protective layer. Efforts like international agreements have reduced CFC emissions to help restore the ozone layer.
