Oxygenation Index

The Oxygenation Index (OI) is a measurement used to assess how well a patient's lungs are transferring oxygen into their blood, especially in critically ill individuals. It considers the amount of oxygen they’re receiving, the pressure used to deliver it, and how effectively their lungs are absorbing it. A higher OI indicates poorer oxygen transfer and more severe lung impairment, often seen in conditions like acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Healthcare providers use the OI to evaluate lung function, guide treatment decisions, and monitor disease progression or response to therapy.
