oxygen depletion
Oxygen depletion occurs when the amount of oxygen in a particular environment decreases significantly, often due to increased consumption by organisms, respiration, or chemical processes like decay and pollution. In aquatic systems, for example, excess nutrients can cause algae blooms, which, when they die and decompose, consume large amounts of oxygen. This can create hypoxic (low-oxygen) or anoxic (no oxygen) conditions, making it difficult for marine life to survive. In enclosed spaces or valleys, limited airflow or rapid consumption can similarly reduce oxygen levels, impacting air quality and the health of living organisms.
