Overrunning Clutch

An overrunning clutch is a device that allows a rotating part to turn freely in one direction while preventing it from moving in the opposite direction. It is commonly used in machinery like bicycle hub gears or automotive starters to engage or disengage components smoothly. When the driven component speeds up beyond the driving one, the clutch disengages, allowing free movement. Conversely, when the driving component speeds up, the clutch locks, transferring power. This ensures efficient operation, prevents damage from reverse motion, and allows components to reset or freewheel without interference.
