Ottoman Law Code

The Ottoman Law Code, also known as the Kanun, was a set of legal regulations established by the Ottoman Empire to govern its vast and diverse population. It complemented Islamic law (Sharia) by addressing secular matters such as land ownership, taxation, and criminal justice. Formulated by rulers like Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century, the Code aimed to create a uniform legal framework to enhance administration and maintain order. It reflected both traditional Islamic principles and the practical needs of governance, adapting over time to meet the evolving demands of the empire.
