Born in 1941 in Georgia, he rose to fame in the 1960s with hits like “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay,” “These Arms of Mine,” and “Try a Little Tenderness.” Redding’s powerful voice and emotive performances helped shape the genre, blending elements of gospel, rhythm and blues, and rock.
