Osteoporosis assessment

Osteoporosis assessment evaluates bone health to determine fracture risk. The primary method is a bone mineral density (BMD) test, usually a DEXA scan, which measures bone density at key sites like the hip and spine. Results are compared to average values for healthy young adults, producing a T-score: a score of -1.0 or above is normal, -1.0 to -2.5 indicates osteopenia (lower bone density), and -2.5 or below signifies osteoporosis. Doctors consider these results alongside risk factors such as age, gender, medical history, and lifestyle to develop a comprehensive plan for prevention or treatment.
