Osteon
An osteon, also known as a Haversian system, is the fundamental structural unit of compact bone. It consists of concentric layers, called lamellae, of mineralized matrix that surround a central channel called the Haversian canal. This canal houses blood vessels and nerves, providing nutrients and removing waste from bone cells. Osteons are arranged parallel to the bone's long axis, contributing to the strength and resilience of compact bone. They work together in a tightly organized system that supports the skeletal structure, enabling bones to handle stress and facilitate healing.
