Osteological Paradox
The Osteological Paradox refers to the challenge in studying ancient populations through skeletal remains. It highlights that individuals with more signs of disease or stress on their bones often lived longer or had better access to healthcare, while those who died quickly or young may show fewer markings. This means that skeletal health stories can be misleading, as more “marked” bones don't necessarily indicate worse health overall, but perhaps a different survival pattern. Researchers must carefully interpret these bones, recognizing that bone markers reflect complex life histories rather than straightforward health status.
