Osteogenic distraction
Osteogenic distraction is a surgical process used to encourage new bone growth by gradually stretching existing bone. A device called a distraction apparatus is attached to the bone, and after a healing period, it slowly pulls apart the bone segments at a controlled rate. This stretching stimulates the body to generate new bone tissue in the gap. The technique is often used to repair facial or jawbone deficiencies, allowing for bone regeneration without the need for grafts, ultimately helping restore function and appearance in cases of congenital defects, trauma, or disease.
