Organochlorines

Organochlorines are a group of chemical compounds containing chlorine atoms bonded to carbon. They were widely used in pesticides (like DDT), industrial processes, and as disinfectants because of their stability and effectiveness. However, organochlorines are persistent in the environment, meaning they break down very slowly, and can accumulate in the fatty tissues of animals and humans. This buildup can pose health risks, including hormonal disruptions and cancer. Due to these concerns, many organochlorines have been banned or restricted in numerous countries, though they remain in some environments and ecosystems.
