Ordonnances of July 1830

The Ordinances of July 1830 were four decrees issued by King Charles X of France, intended to strengthen royal power. They dissolved the newly elected chamber of deputies, suspended freedom of the press, and restricted voting rights. These measures aimed to restore absolute monarchy but instead angered many citizens, leading to widespread protests and the July Revolution. The uprising resulted in Charles X’s abdication and the establishment of a constitutional monarchy under Louis-Philippe. The ordinances are seen as the catalyst for the July Revolution, marking a shift from revolutionary change to efforts at more conservative, monarchical control.
