Oppositional Gaze

The Oppositional Gaze is a concept from Black feminist theory that describes a way Black viewers have historically resisted and challenged mainstream media's negative or stereotypical portrayals of Black people. Instead of passively accepting these images, viewers can critically analyze and question them, asserting their own perspective and identity. It’s a form of empowerment that allows marginalized groups to reclaim control over how they are represented and to challenge dominant narratives. Essentially, it encourages active, conscious engagement with media to resist stereotypes and promote authentic self-expression.
