opioid receptor antagonist

An opioid receptor antagonist is a medication that binds to specific receptors in the brain and body responsible for the effects of opioids, such as pain relief and euphoria. Instead of activating these receptors, it blocks them, preventing opioids from producing their effects. This can be useful in overdose situations to quickly reverse dangerous respiratory depression caused by opioids, or in addiction treatment to decrease cravings and prevent misuse. Examples include naloxone (Narcan), which is commonly used to treat opioid overdoses, and naltrexone, used to support addiction recovery.
