Operation Sophia

Operation Sophia is a European-led mission launched in 2015 to combat human smuggling and trafficking in the Mediterranean Sea. Its main goal is to disrupt criminal networks by inspecting, seizing vessels involved in illegal migration, and rescuing migrants in danger. The operation also aims to gather intelligence and build cooperation among participating countries to improve border security. While initially authorized to engage in all necessary activities, its scope shifted primarily to capacity building and maritime patrols, emphasizing a strategic approach to managing migration challenges in the region.
