Operation Dragoon

Operation Dragoon was the Allied invasion of southern France during World War II, launched on August 15, 1944. It aimed to open a new front, help push back German forces, and accelerate the liberation of France from Nazi control. Allied forces, mainly American and Free French troops, landed along the Provence coast, quickly advancing inland. This operation complemented the earlier invasion in Normandy and helped secure southern France, disrupt German defenses, and facilitate the movement of troops and supplies into Europe. It played a strategic role in accelerating the overall Allied victory in Western Europe.
