Operation Banner

Operation Banner was the UK’s military response to the conflict in Northern Ireland from 1969 to 2007. It involved deploying thousands of soldiers to support police efforts in maintaining order during a period of sectarian violence between mainly Protestant and Catholic communities. The operation aimed to prevent violence, protect civilians, and restore peace, often involving patrols, security checks, and intelligence activities. Over time, its presence became a symbol of security challenges, and it officially ended in 2007 as the political situation in Northern Ireland improved and a power-sharing government was established.
