Operation Avalanche

Operation Avalanche was the code name for the Allied invasion of Italy during World War II, which began on September 3, 1943. This military operation aimed to take control of the Italian mainland, disrupt Axis supply lines, and ultimately remove Italy from the war. The Allies, primarily composed of American and British forces, landed at Salerno, facing fierce resistance but eventually making progress. The operation was part of a larger strategy to open a new front against Germany, diverting resources and attention away from other conflict areas, notably the ongoing battles in the Pacific and in Northwest Europe.
