Open hearth steelmaking
Open hearth steelmaking is a traditional method used to produce large quantities of high-quality steel. It involves heating scrap metal, iron ore, and other raw materials in a deep, rectangular furnace called an open hearth furnace. As the materials melt and react, impurities are removed, and carbon content adjusts to achieve desired steel properties. The process allows precise control over the composition and temperature, ensuring consistent quality. Once the steel reaches the right specifications, it is tapped from the furnace, cast into ingots, and further processed into various steel products. This method was widely used before being phased out in favor of more modern techniques.
