Onychomycosis (Nail fungus)
Onychomycosis is a common fungal infection that affects the nails, causing them to become thickened, discolored (often yellow or white), brittle, and sometimes deformed. It occurs when fungi, such as dermatophytes, invade the nail tissue, thriving in warm, moist environments. The infection can start at the edge of the nail and gradually spread deeper, leading to nail damage and potential discomfort. It’s more common in adults, especially those with nail trauma, poor circulation, or immune issues. Treatment can include topical antifungal medications or oral drugs, and maintaining good foot hygiene can help prevent infection.
