Onychocryptosis (Ingrown toenail)
Onychocryptosis, commonly known as an ingrown toenail, occurs when the edge of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes infection. It often happens due to improper nail trimming, tight footwear, or injury. The most affected toe is usually the big toe. Treatment may include soaking the toe, proper nail trimming, and in severe cases, medical intervention to remove the ingrown portion or infection. Preventative measures include cutting toenails straight across and wearing well-fitting shoes. If untreated, it can lead to more serious infections or complications.
