Oncogenic retroviruses
Oncogenic retroviruses are viruses that can cause cancer by inserting their genetic material into the DNA of a host cell. This integration can lead to uncontrolled cell growth, as the virus may activate or disrupt genes that regulate cell division. Examples include certain strains of human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV) and some animal viruses. These viruses do not directly cause cancer immediately but increase the risk over time by altering normal cellular functions, ultimately potentially leading to tumors. Their study helps scientists understand virus-related cancers and develop preventive measures.
