oncogenic addiction

Oncogenic addiction refers to the phenomenon where cancer cells become highly dependent on one or a few genetic changes or signaling pathways—called oncogenes—for their growth and survival. Despite having numerous genetic abnormalities, these cells rely heavily on these specific oncogenes, much like a person relying on a central source of energy. When treatments target and block this key oncogene, the cancer cells often cannot survive or grow, leading to their destruction. This concept helps explain why targeted therapies against specific oncogenes can be effective in cancer treatment.
