Oncogen

An oncogene is a gene that, when altered or mutated, can promote the uncontrolled growth of cells, leading to cancer. Normally, these genes help regulate cell growth and division, but changes can turn them into "gas pedals" that cause cells to divide excessively. Think of oncogenes as switches that, when stuck in the "on" position, encourage abnormal cell proliferation.
