Oncofetal antigens

Oncofetal antigens are proteins typically produced during fetal development that can also be found in adult cancer cells. They serve as biological markers, helping doctors identify and monitor certain types of cancers. Since these antigens are usually absent or minimal in normal adult tissues, their presence can indicate abnormal cell growth. Examples include alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Detecting these antigens through blood tests aids in cancer diagnosis, assessing treatment response, and monitoring for recurrence, making them important tools in oncology.
