Onchocerciasis Control Programme
The Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP) is an international effort to eliminate river blindness, a disease caused by a parasitic worm transmitted by blackflies near rivers. The program involves treating affected populations with the drug ivermectin, which reduces the number of worms and prevents transmission. It also includes vector control measures to reduce blackfly populations and health education to inform communities. Started in West Africa in 1974, the OCP has successfully reduced disease prevalence, preventing blindness and improving lives. Its approach combines medication, vector control, and community engagement to control and ultimately aim to eliminate river blindness.
