Oliver Cromwell's rule

Oliver Cromwell was a 17th-century English military and political leader who played a key role during the English Civil War. After Parliament defeated King Charles I, Cromwell led the Parliamentarian forces and eventually became the head of a ruling government called the Commonwealth. In 1653, he dismissed Parliament and became Lord Protector, effectively ruling England as a military dictator until his death in 1658. His rule was marked by efforts to enforce Puritan religious morals, military discipline, and the suppression of uprisings, which led to both stability and controversy in England during his tenure.
