Olfactory Sensory Neurons

Olfactory sensory neurons are specialized cells located in the nasal cavity that detect odors. They have tiny hair-like structures called cilia, which trap scent molecules from the air we breathe. When these molecules bind to receptors on the cilia, the neurons send electrical signals through the olfactory nerve to the brain. This process allows us to perceive and recognize different smells. These neurons are unique because they can regenerate throughout life, helping us maintain our sense of smell over time.
