Okanagan Lake Treaty (1911)
The Okanagan Lake Treaty of 1911 was an agreement between the Canadian government and the Syilx (Okanagan) people, intended to settle land rights and governance in the Okanagan region. It aimed to formalize the relationship, recognizing Indigenous interests while allowing for settlement and development. However, the treaty largely focused on land use and did not fully acknowledge Indigenous sovereignty or provide comprehensive land rights. Over time, it became a foundation for ongoing discussions about Indigenous land claims and self-determination in British Columbia.
