OGC Web Map Service (WMS)

The OGC Web Map Service (WMS) is a standard designed to help users access and share map images over the internet. It allows different systems to request and receive maps dynamically from a server, making it easy to display various types of geographic information, like satellite images or topographic maps. When a user asks for a map, the WMS generates a picture based on the specified parameters, such as location and layers of information (like roads or water bodies), and sends it back to the user’s device for viewing. This promotes interoperability in mapping technologies.
