Odorant Receptors

Odorant receptors are specialized proteins located on sensory nerve cells in the nose that detect smells. When airborne molecules enter the nose and bind to these receptors, they trigger electrical signals that travel to the brain, allowing us to perceive different odors. Each receptor is tuned to recognize specific types of smell molecules, and the combination of signals from many receptors creates the unique perception of complex odors. This system enables us to distinguish a wide variety of scents, from food aromas to environmental smells, playing a crucial role in taste, safety, and emotional responses.
