Octoechos
Octoechos is a systemic framework used in Eastern Orthodox, Byzantine, and some other Christian traditions to organize musical modes, called "tones," over an eight-week cycle. Each week is dedicated to one of these eight modes, which define the style and character of chant music performed during that period. The system helps singers and composers maintain musical cohesion and spiritual rhythm throughout the liturgical year. It blends melodic patterns, tonal characteristics, and prayer practices, creating a structured yet flexible approach to Orthodox chant that emphasizes continuity and tradition within the worship experience.
