Ocean Carbon Cycle

The ocean carbon cycle involves the movement of carbon among the atmosphere, the surface ocean, and the deep ocean. Phytoplankton, tiny marine plants, absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. Some of this carbon becomes part of organic matter that sinks, transporting carbon to deeper waters. The ocean also dissolves CO₂ from the atmosphere, acting as a carbon sink. Over time, deep ocean currents distribute this stored carbon globally. This cycle helps regulate Earth's climate by controlling atmospheric carbon levels, but human activities like burning fossil fuels are increasing CO₂ concentrations, affecting this natural balance.
