Oba Ovonramwen Nokhodion

Oba Ovonramwen Nokhodion was the traditional ruler of the Benin Kingdom (present-day Nigeria) from 1888 to 1897. He was the last independent Oba before the British invasion and colonization. During his reign, Britain sought control over the region’s trade and resources, leading to the Anglo-British Punitive Expedition in 1897. Ovonramwen resisted British interference, but the invasion overwhelmed Benin’s defenses. He was captured, exiled, and later died in 1914. His leadership symbolizes Nigerian resistance to colonial dominance and the end of the independent Benin monarchy.
