O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT)

O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) is an enzyme that helps protect our DNA from damage caused by certain chemicals or radiation. It repairs a specific type of DNA modification called methylation at the O6 position of guanine, a DNA building block. When DNA is damaged in this way, it can lead to mutations and cancer. MGMT works by removing the harmful methyl group, restoring the DNA to its normal state. High levels of MGMT in tumors can make them resistant to some chemotherapy treatments, while low levels may make cancer cells more vulnerable to therapy.
