Nunn-Lugar Act

The Nunn-Lugar Act, officially called the Cooperative Threat Reduction Program, was enacted in 1991 to help secure and dismantle nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons formerly held by the Soviet Union. Its goal was to prevent these weapons from falling into the wrong hands after the Cold War ended. The program provided funding and technical support to safely destroy weapons, deprogram scientists, and secure dangerous materials. This cooperation aimed to reduce global security risks and promote stability by ensuring weapons of mass destruction are safely managed and eliminated.
