Nuclear Deterrence Theory

Nuclear deterrence theory suggests that the possession of nuclear weapons by states discourages aggression because the threat of devastating retaliation—known as mutually assured destruction—makes war too risky and unacceptable. In essence, countries avoid conflict because they know a nuclear attack would lead to catastrophic consequences for both sides. This balance of fear aims to prevent wars, maintaining peace through the threat of overwhelming retaliation rather than active conflict.
