NTM (Non-tuberculous mycobacteria)
Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are a diverse group of bacteria found naturally in soil, water, and indoor environments. Unlike the bacteria that cause tuberculosis, NTMs are not typically transmitted person-to-person. They can sometimes cause lung infections, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems or pre-existing lung conditions, leading to symptoms like cough, fatigue, and weight loss. NTMs are diagnosed through specialized tests, and treatment usually involves a combination of antibiotics over an extended period. While not as contagious or widespread as tuberculosis, NTMs are important to understand because they can cause illness in susceptible people.
