Novorossiya

Novorossiya, or "New Russia," was a term used historically for territories in southeastern Ukraine that were part of the Russian Empire from the late 18th century. In recent political context, it refers to a pro-Russian movement and self-declared republics—such as Donetsk and Luhansk—formed during the conflict following Ukraine's 2014 revolution. These regions sought closer ties with Russia or independence, leading to clashes with Ukrainian government forces. The concept of Novorossiya symbolizes both historical territorial claims and contemporary geopolitical tensions, involving issues of national identity, sovereignty, and regional conflict.
