Nottingham Grading System
The Nottingham Grading System is a method used by pathologists to evaluate breast tumor biopsies. It assesses three key features: tumor cell structure (how abnormal the cells look), mitotic count (how quickly cells are dividing), and gland formation (how much tumor tissue resembles normal breast tissue). Each category is scored from 1 to 3, then combined for a total score from 3 to 9. This score helps determine the tumor's grade, indicating how aggressive it may be. Lower scores suggest less aggressive tumors, while higher scores point to more aggressive ones, guiding treatment decisions.
