Notch3 gene
The Notch3 gene provides instructions for making a protein involved in cell communication, especially in the development and maintenance of blood vessels in the brain and muscles. This protein plays a crucial role in controlling how cells grow, develop, and survive, ensuring proper blood vessel function. When Notch3 functions correctly, it helps maintain healthy tissues; however, mutations or changes in this gene can disrupt these processes and are linked to a rare hereditary condition called CADASIL, which affects blood flow in the brain and can lead to strokes and cognitive decline.
